How Can I Avoid Comment Spam On My Website
Comments can be a great way to engage visitors on your website and foster some great dialog and discussion. Unfortunately comments can also be abused by spammers who create gibberish and nonsense to promote keywords and links to their website. Here are some ideas to help you secure the comment area of your website which should help keep comment spam away.
- Don’t allow anonymous posting
- Moderate the comments on your website, that’s what I do.
- Use a reCAPTCHA to ensure a bot or spammer didn’t enter the comment
- Turn on or use the “nofollow” attribute for links in the comment field.
- Don’t allow hyperlinks in comments
- Only allow registered users to place comments on the blog
What if my site already has comment spam?
It’s not too late to fix your site and your future problems! Spammers can ruin the experience of vistors to your website who seek your valuable content by leaving their spam links behind on your comment sites. Implement the comment spam security measures in the list above. Unfortunately you’ll also have to invest time into cleaning those crappy comments from your website. If you lucky, your website authoring tools may allow you to save time by banning the spammers and removing their comments all at the same time.
