Ideal PageRank is Normally Achieved by a Hierarchical Website Design
In order to preserve and promote the appropriate amount of page rank to your most important pages, it’s best to use a natural hierarchical page structure (see sample below). This type of website design naturally transfers page rank to and from your sites main page and your top most important pages, preserving page rand and improving your Google Search Engine Optimization. In the example below, the Pets main page is linked to and from Cats, Dogs and Birds. Each of your most important pages would than link to and from their respective support pages. In this case Cats would have links to and from the types of cats support pages; Persian and Siamese and so on.
This hierarchical structure for transferring and preserving page rank is actually documented by Google in their Webmaster Guidelines:
“Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.”
Another way to think of a hierarchical structure is one based on categories. For example a main page, categories and subcategories. The keywords for the main page would target a general keyword search term with each of the category pages offering more specific keyword phrases. See the sample pet store page below. Notice that the keyword and page structure are both aligned for both the search user and hierarchical structure.
Here’s a sample hierarchical website structure showing main pages with their corresponding support pages:
Pets
Cats
Persian
Siamese
Dogs
Poodle
German Sheppard
Birds
Parrots
African Greys
Macaws
Cockatoos
